Jena Antonucci 1st Female Trainer to Win Race
The 2023 Belmont Stakes didn't have any chance at a Triple Crown winner, but it still made history.
Arcangelo, trained by Jena Antonucci, won the 155th Belmont Stakes on Saturday, becoming the first female trainer to win the race. Antonucci, a 38-year-old native of New Jersey, has been training horses for over a decade. She is the first woman to train a horse to victory in any of the three Triple Crown races.
Arcangelo, a 3-year-old colt, rallied from sixth place to win the race by two lengths. He was ridden by jockey Javier Castellano, who won his second Belmont Stakes. Castellano also rode American Pharoah to victory in the 2015 Belmont Stakes, becoming the first jockey to win the race three times in a row.
The victory was a major upset, as Arcangelo was not considered one of the favorites for the race. He was the longest shot in the field of eight horses, with odds of 13-1. However, Antonucci and Castellano were confident in the horse's ability, and they proved to be right.
